Controlling nonlinear waves in excitable media

چکیده
A new feedback control method is proposed to control the spatio-temporal dynamics in excitable media. Applying suitable external forcing to the system’s slow variable, successful suppression and control of propagating pulses as well as spiral waves can be obtained. The proposed controller is composed by an observer to infer uncertain terms such as diffusive transport and kinetic rates, and an inverse-dynamics feedback function. Numerical simulations shown the effectiveness of the proposed feedback control approach. 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Core solutions of rigidly rotating spiral waves in highly excitable media.
Analytical spiral wave solutions for reaction-diffusion equations play an important role in studying spiral wave dynamics. In this paper, we focus on such analytical solutions in the case of highly excitable media. We present numerical evidence that, for rigidly rotating spiral waves in highly excitable media, the species values in the spiral core region do harmonic oscillations but not relaxat...
متن کاملControlling turbulence in excitable media by applying boundary periodic pacing and gradient force
– Spiral wave and turbulence control in excitable media by applying periodic pacing on system’s boundary is investigated. It is found that spiral waves can be always successfully controlled by boundary periodic forcing with suitable forcing amplitude and frequency. Turbulence caused by spiral-wave breakup is uncontrollable by the boundary pacing, whatever the forcing amplitude and frequency, if...
متن کاملSpiral waves in excitable media with negative restitution.
We study numerically the dynamics of spiral waves in an excitable medium with negative restitution. For our study we use two models of the excitable medium: a cellular automaton and a reaction-diffusion model. There are no significant effects of negative restitution as long as the slope of the restitution curve is less steep than -1. In media with slopes steeper than -1, the dynamics of spiral ...
متن کاملOscillatory Waves in an Inhomogeneous Excitable Medium
An excitable medium is a nonlinear dissipative dynamical system able to sustain undamped wave propagation. Examples of excitable media include cardiac tissue and neural media. This thesis investigates a class of novel dynamical phenomena in excitable media, known collectively as oscillatory waves. The examples of oscillatory waves considered here are Tango waves, breathers and pulse generators....
متن کاملDesign and control of wave propagation patterns in excitable media.
Intricate patterns of wave propagation are exhibited in a chemical reaction-diffusion system with spatiotemporal feedback. Wave behavior is controlled by feedback-regulated excitability gradients that guide propagation in specified directions. Waves interacting with boundaries and with other waves are observed when interaction terms are incorporated into the control algorithm. Spatiotemporal fe...
